The trust check

Facts with sources, not a score.

Every firm gets the same plain list of facts you can check for yourself, each linked to where it comes from. It is not a rating, a ranking or a recommendation. Unknowns stay unknown.

  1. 01

    It’s a real firm

Sourced from the firm’s own website and official listings, with contact details. Lead-generation pages, referral services and call centers don’t count.

  2. 02

    State Bar of California profile

The lead attorney’s official State Bar profile, linked: license status, year admitted, whether public discipline is on record, and any certified specialty the State Bar lists. Listed only when the status is Active.

  3. 03

    State Bar number published

Whether the firm prints a State Bar number on its own site. The State Bar profile is the official record.

  4. 04

Se habla español and other languages

Spanish and other languages, only as the firm’s own site states them.

  5. 05

Free consultation and fees, as stated

Whether the firm states a free consultation or a contingency fee, quoted as written. Ask for any fee agreement in writing.

  6. 06

24/7 availability and offices, as stated

What the firm says about when it takes calls and where its offices are.

Look the lawyer up on the State Bar site, ask who will handle your matter and how the fee works, and get the agreement in writing. How to check a California lawyer ↗

  1. Is the lawyer’s license active?Look the lawyer up on the State Bar of California’s attorney search (calbar.ca.gov). The status should read Active. The profile also shows any public discipline.
  2. Who will handle my matter?Ask which lawyer will do the work day to day, and check that lawyer’s own State Bar profile.
  3. How is the fee worked out?Ask how the fee is calculated and who pays case costs. California requires contingency fee agreements in writing: read it before you sign.
  4. What deadlines apply?Deadlines apply to these claims and can be short. Ask about yours at the first meeting.

GOOD QUESTIONS

What this directory is,
and how to check a lawyer.

Plain answers about the State Bar record, fees, reporting elder abuse and how Find Malpractice Lawyers works. General information, not legal advice. How we source our listings ↗

What is Find Malpractice Lawyers, and what is it not?
Find Malpractice Lawyers is a directory of California law firms that handle medical malpractice and nursing home and elder neglect cases. You read the listings and contact a firm yourself, by its own phone or website. It is not a law firm and not a lawyer referral service: we do not recommend, endorse, match or refer you to any lawyer, we do not pass your details or the facts of your situation to any firm, and nothing here is legal advice. Find Malpractice Lawyers lists 252 firms across 64 California areas, each with a State Bar profile linked, and shows the date we last checked (latest check 2026-11-05).
How do I check a lawyer on the State Bar of California’s website?
Use the attorney search on calbar.ca.gov and search by name or State Bar number. The profile shows the license status (it should read Active), when the lawyer was admitted, any public discipline on record, and any certified specialty from the State Bar’s Board of Legal Specialization. Check the lawyer who will actually handle your matter, not only the firm.
What does medical malpractice mean?
In general terms, it is a claim that a health care provider, such as a doctor, nurse, hospital or pharmacy, caused harm by falling below the standard of care: for example a missed or delayed diagnosis, a surgical error, a birth injury or a medication error. A bad outcome is not malpractice on its own. California has its own rules for these claims, and deadlines apply; ask a lawyer whether and how they apply to you. This is general information, not legal advice.
What is the difference between a medical malpractice claim and an elder abuse claim?
In general terms, medical malpractice is about negligent health care, while elder abuse and neglect claims are about how an older or dependent adult was treated or cared for, for example in a nursing home or assisted living, and can include financial abuse. California has a separate law for elder and dependent adult abuse, and some situations may involve both. Which applies depends on the facts, and deadlines apply: ask a lawyer. This is general information, not legal advice.
Where do I report suspected elder abuse in California?
If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. Otherwise, you can report to your county’s Adult Protective Services (APS), or, for residents of nursing homes and assisted living, to the Long-Term Care Ombudsman program run through the California Department of Aging. Facility complaints can also go to the licensing agency: the California Department of Public Health for skilled nursing facilities, and the Department of Social Services’ Community Care Licensing for assisted living. You do not need proof to report.
How do these lawyers charge?
Many firms in this area of law work on a contingency fee, meaning the fee is a share of any recovery, but terms differ, and who pays case costs differs too. California requires contingency fee agreements to be in writing: ask how the fee is worked out and read the agreement before you sign. 130 firms in the directory state a contingency fee and 213 firms state a free consultation on their own sites. Find Malpractice Lawyers charges visitors nothing.
What does “Advertisement” mean on this site?
A listing marked “Advertisement” is a paid placement: the firm pays a flat fee for extra visibility. It is not a recommendation or endorsement, and it is never paid per lead, call, case or referral, or as a share of fees. Advertisements appear in a labeled space apart from the main list, which is in alphabetical order or by distance, and they never change a firm’s trust check.
What does the directory check?
For every firm: that it is a real, sourced business; its lead attorney’s State Bar of California profile (a firm is listed only when that status reads Active); and, as the firm’s own site states them, a State Bar number, Spanish spoken, other languages, a free consultation, a contingency fee, 24/7 availability and office locations. Each item links to its source. It is a list of facts, not a score or ranking, and there are no ratings or reviews here.
A firm is missing or out of date. How do I fix it?
Firms can claim a free profile, and anyone can suggest a missing firm or a correction from the “For businesses” page. Changes are checked against the firm’s own site and the State Bar of California before anything changes on a public profile.
